Although this training is virtual, Bali remains part of its heart. Through images, stories, practice, song, and ceremony, the workshop creates space to slow down, connect, and learn with intention.
No. No prior medical experience or motherhood is required to participate in this training.
All that is needed is a genuine desire to support mothers, babies, and families during this special, challenging, and sacred time.
Postpartum care is rooted in ancient traditions of community care, wisdom and practices that have been passed down through generations by grandparents, elders, and birth workers. This training honors cultural traditions while giving you practical knowledge, tools, and confidence to provide compassionate postpartum support.
Whether you are new to birth work, a parent yourself, a caregiver, or simply feel called to support families in the postpartum period, there is a place for you here.
This workshop is a key step toward becoming a DONA Certified Postpartum Doula, but the workshop itself does not grant full DONA certification.
Our DONA-approved Postpartum Doula Workshop fulfills one of the main requirements in the DONA certification process: completing an approved postpartum doula training workshop.
During our live, interactive virtual workshop, we’ll not only cover the core training material, but also walk you through the additional steps involved in completing your certification journey, including required reading, documenting care provided to three families, and other certification requirements.
Think of this workshop as the foundation and roadmap for your DONA certification. You’ll leave with the knowledge, resources, and guidance you need to continue completing the remaining requirements.
You can review DONA International’s official Postpartum Doula Certification Overview Guide here https://dona.org/resource/postpartum-doula-certification-overview-guide/ for the most current certification requirements.
No. This is a live, interactive workshop designed for connection, participation, and real-time learning.
Attendance at all live sessions is required in order to receive your certificate of completion, which you will use as part of your DONA Postpartum Doula certification process.
Because this is an interactive experience, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, participate in discussions, learn from real-world examples, and connect with others on the same path.
Please plan to attend every session live. There are no recordings or make-up sessions provided.
Our virtual EPD program offers an opportunity to learn, connect, and build community from wherever you are in the world. We do everything we can to create a meaningful circle of support, foster connection within a global community, and provide an in-depth learning experience, all from the comfort of your own home.
That said, nothing quite compares to being together in person for eight days in Bali. Our retreats offer a deeper level of immersion: living and learning together, sharing meals and experiences, connecting face-to-face with your retreat community, and having the opportunity to experience Bali’s culture, sacred traditions, and beautiful surroundings firsthand.
The in-person retreat is a truly immersive experience that extends beyond the classroom and invites you to slow down, connect, learn, and nurture yourself.
We believe our virtual program is the next best thing, especially for those who aren’t able to travel to Bali. You’ll still receive extensive training, meaningful connection, and the support of a community of like-hearted people on this journey.
You don’t have to do this work alone. When you complete the workshop, you become part of the Eat Pray Doula community—a sisterhood of doulas and birth workers who continue to learn, share, and support one another long after the workshop ends.
You’ll be invited into our lifetime WhatsApp community, where you can stay connected with your teachers and fellow postpartum doula workshop participants. Our community remains active, with ongoing conversations, encouragement, shared experiences, current information, and support as you begin and grow your work as a postpartum doula.
Whether you have a question while supporting a family, need a little encouragement, want to share a win, or are looking for guidance as you build your doula business, your community is there.
We believe becoming a doula is more than completing a training, it’s joining a community. Once you’re part of Eat Pray Doula, you’re part of the sisterhood for life.
Our Postpartum Doula Workshop goes far beyond the basics of newborn care. We weave together evidence-informed education, ancestral wisdom, emotional healing, physical recovery, cultural traditions, birth justice, and the practical skills needed to confidently support families.
Throughout the workshop, you’ll explore:
🌿 The Fourth Trimester & Global Postpartum Traditions
Discover how cultures around the world have cared for mothers, babies, and families after birth. We explore the history and evolution of postpartum care, traditional healing practices, family leave policies, and the wisdom of communities and elders.
🤍 The Postpartum Body, Mind & Spirit
Learn about physical recovery after vaginal and cesarean birth, lochia, involution, tears, hemorrhoids, sexuality, body image, and the emotional transformation of becoming a parent.
🫶 Emotional Support & Trauma-Informed Care
Develop skills for compassionate listening, cultural safety, trauma-informed care, intergenerational healing, and supporting families through the profound emotional transition of the postpartum period. We also explore perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and the doula’s role in recognizing concerns and making appropriate referrals.
🌎 Birth Justice, Racism & Cultural Safety
We examine the history of racism in maternity care, racial disparities in postpartum outcomes, anti-racist practice, advocacy, and the role doulas can play in advancing birth justice and health equity.
👶 Understanding & Caring for Newborns
Build practical confidence around newborn behavior and reflexes, safe sleep, infant massage, babywearing, cord care, diapering, the 5 S’s, multiples, and circumcision and intact care.
🤱 Infant Feeding & Lactation Support
Learn foundational knowledge about breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and lactation while understanding the postpartum doula’s scope of practice and when specialized lactation support or other referrals are needed.
🏡 Supporting the Whole Family
A new baby transforms an entire family system. We explore how to support parents, partners, siblings, grandparents, and even beloved pets as everyone adjusts to their new roles and relationships.
🕯️ Loss, Birth Trauma & Compassionate Referral
We create space to understand how birth experiences can shape the postpartum period and explore how doulas can compassionately support families experiencing birth trauma, perinatal loss, and other challenging transitions.
🌺 Ancient Wisdom & Sacred Traditions
We honor postpartum traditions that have been passed through generations, including the significance of the placenta across cultures and a Traditional Mexican Postpartum Rebozo Closing Ceremony with midwife Alejandra Lozano Flores.
✨ The Art of Being a Doula
You’ll practice active listening, compassionate communication, informed decision-making, boundaries, safety, ethics, referrals, and the NEAR model—Nurture, Educate, Assess, Refer—so you can step into your role with confidence and clarity.
💼 Building Your Doula Practice
Your training doesn’t stop with supporting families. We’ll also guide you through the beginnings of creating your own doula practice, including fees, professional practices, marketing goals, business resources, continuing education, liability insurance, and navigating your DONA certification pathway.
At the heart of the training is our belief that postpartum care is both an art and a practice—grounded in knowledge and evidence, while also honoring the ancient wisdom, traditions, relationships, and rituals that have supported mothers and families for generations.
You won’t simply learn what to do. You’ll explore how to listen, how to hold space, how to recognize when more support is needed, and how to honor each family’s unique culture, values, and journey.
Yes. We believe financial circumstances shouldn’t have to stand in the way of answering your calling to support mothers, babies, and families.
We offer several options to make the training more accessible:

We offer 3 scholarships providing 25% off tuition for BIPOC students.
Indonesian Community Scholarships
As part of our commitment to giving back to the beautiful community that welcomes and hosts us in Bali each year, we offer 3 scholarships providing 50% off tuition for Indonesian students.

We’re committed to creating a learning community that is as accessible, inclusive, and diverse as possible—and we’re grateful to have the opportunity to welcome doulas from around the world into this work.
Once you complete our workshop, you are ready to begin taking clients right away. You do not need to wait until you have completed the full DONA certification process to begin building your experience and supporting families within your postpartum scope of practice.
Once you complete our workshop on February 17, 2027, you’ll have three years to complete the remaining requirements for DONA Postpartum Doula certification.
In our experience, many doulas begin connecting with potential clients while they are in our workshop. Simply sharing with your community that you’re training as a postpartum doula can open doors—friends, family, and friends-of-friends often begin reaching out because they or someone they know is expecting.
Many of our students complete their required 3 client experiences, reading, and other certification requirements within 4–6 months, allowing them to complete their certification and launch their doula businesses relatively quickly.
Others choose a slower, more spacious path—especially those caring for young children, balancing work, or navigating other life commitments. They may take 1–2 years to complete their certification and then feel ready to fully immerse themselves in their doula practice.
There is no single right timeline. You can begin supporting families after completing the workshop while continuing to work toward your DONA certification at a pace that fits your life.
You’ll leave our workshop with the knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and community support to begin your postpartum doula journey right away.
If you find it necessary to cancel your reservation, please note that no refunds are provided. However, your space is transferable — you may sell or gift your reservation to another person.
